As I understood until now, Kubernetes is like operation system. It manages the cluster.

Helm is like docker-compose.

A good Analogy from Gemini:

Kubernetes ConceptAnalogy: The Modern City Infrastructure
Kubernetes (K8s)The City Government & Central Infrastructure. This is the main system that manages the city’s power grid, roads, security, and scheduling. It ensures everything runs where and when it’s needed.
ClusterThe entire City. Everything within its boundaries.
NodeA City Block or a Neighborhood. These are the physical locations (servers) where housing is built and where services are offered.
PodAn Apartment Unit or Small House. This is the smallest, single unit that is built and scheduled by the government (K8s) onto a specific block (Node).
ContainerThe Residents or Appliances inside the house. This is your actual application code, database, or web server running inside the Pod.
DeploymentThe City Zoning Board & Master Plan. This blueprint specifies, “We must always have 5 identical apartment units (Pods) running in this city,” and it automatically replaces any unit that burns down or breaks.
ServiceThe Public Utility Address (e.g., a P.O. Box or Fixed Phone Number). This is the stable way for other parts of the city to contact your application, even if the house (Pod) is torn down and rebuilt in a new location.
HelmA Real Estate Developer/Construction Firm. They take a complex, reusable blueprint (“The Standard Pizza App Complex”) and can instantly deploy all necessary parts (the Pods, the Services, the Deployments) across the city with simple configuration changes (like the address or size).

Summary of the Workflow

Your goal is to run a business (your application) in this city.

  1. You hire Helm (The Developer) to install your application.
  2. Helm uses the Master Plan (Deployment) to tell the City Government (Kubernetes): “Build me 5 identical Houses (Pods).”
  3. Kubernetes schedules those Houses (Pods) onto various Blocks (Nodes) across the city.
  4. You assign a Fixed Address (Service) to those 5 Houses so that customers can always find you, no matter which Block the houses are located on.

What is Helm Chart?

Helm Chart ComponentAnalogy: Prefabricated Home Kit
Helm Chart (The Package)The entire Boxed Home Kit. It contains everything you need—the framing, the wiring, the instructions, and all the fixtures—to build a specific structure (your application).
templates/ (The Engine)The Architectural Blueprints and Construction Instructions. These are the generic plans that say, “Build a wall here,” but they have blanks for variables like color or size.
values.yaml (The Configuration)The Order Form / Options List. This single sheet of paper is where you specify: “I want the roof tiles to be Red, the number of bedrooms (replicas) to be 5, and the front door (port) to be Blue.”
Running helm installThe Construction Crew. You hand them the Blueprints (Templates) and the Order Form (values.yaml), and they immediately start building all the necessary structures (Pods, Services, etc.) in the City (Kubernetes Cluster).

Kubernetes
docker
os
